Code of Conduct

The following Code of Conduct pertains to use of the AST Hub Online Communities.

AST Hub Online Community Rules and Etiquette

Thank you for being part of the AST Hub online communities. There are online communities, for each Community of Practice and several other groups. AST members can view any COP's online community, but you must be a member of a COP to actively participate on that COP's online community. The purpose of the AST Hub online communities is to engage with your peers on discussion boards, share valuable resources in a file library, and find other members in your community.

To ensure the best possible experience for all community members, we have established guidelines for participation. By joining and using any AST Hub online community, you agree that you have read and will follow these rules and guidelines. In order to preserve a climate that encourages both civil and fruitful dialogue, we reserve the right to suspend or terminate membership in the community of anyone who violates these rules. Questions should be directed to the AST National Office via the Contact Us link on this site.

General Rules

-Do not challenge or attack others. The discussions and comments are meant to stimulate conversation, not to create contention. Let others have their say, just as you may.
-Do not post commercial messages on any discussion list, resource library entry, or other area where others might see it. Contact people directly with product and service information if you believe it would help them.
-Use caution when discussing products. Information posted on the lists and in the libraries is available for all to see, and comments are subject to libel, slander, and antitrust laws.
-All defamatory, abusive, profane, threatening, offensive, or illegal materials are strictly prohibited. Do not post anything that you would not want the world to see or that you would not want anyone to know came from you.
-Please note carefully all items listed in the disclaimer and legal rules below, particularly regarding the copyright ownership of information posted.
-Remember that other participants have the right to reproduce postings to this site unless you specify otherwise.
-Post your message or documents only to the most appropriate lists or libraries. Do not spam several lists or libraries with the same message.
-All messages must add to the body of knowledge. We reserve the right to reject any message for any reason

Discussion Group Etiquette

-Include a signature tag on all messages with your name, affiliation, and location.
-State concisely and clearly the topic of your comments in the subject line. This allows members to respond more appropriately to your posting and makes it easier for members to search the archives by subject.
-When replying to a message, include only the relevant portions of the original message in your reply. Delete any header information, and put your response before the original posting.
-Send messages such as "thanks for the information" or "me, too" to individuals--not to the entire list. Do this by using the "Reply to Sender" link to the left of every message.
-Only send a message to the entire list when it contains information that everyone can benefit from.
-Do not send administrative messages, such as "remove me from the list." Instead, use the web interface to change your settings or to remove yourself from a list. If you are changing email addresses, you do not need to remove yourself from the list and rejoin under your new email address. Simply change your settings.
-Warn other list subscribers of lengthy messages either in the subject line or at the beginning of the message body with a line that says "Long Message."

Special Note about Job Postings

You are permitted to post a job opening at your institution in the discussion area of a COP's online community, as long as you respect the following guidelines:

-Only post the opening to COP communities relevant to the job description.
-The job opening may only be posted one time.
-Include the job title, a few sentences describing the position, and where to go or who to contact for more information - excessively long job postings may be edited by administrators to include only essential information.
-Job seekers may not post "in search of" messages in the discussion area.
-Once the position is filled, return to the site and delete the discussion item or edit the discussion item to indicate the position is no longer open.
-AST reserves the right to remove any job posting deemed inappropriate.

You are encouraged to use the AST Career Center to reach a wider audience.

External Event Postings

You are permitted to post a non-AST external event (e.g., webinar, meeting) in the discussion area of a COP's online community, as long as you respect the following guidelines:

-Only post the event to COP communities relevant to the event.
-The event may only be posted one time.
-Include the event title, a few sentences describing it, and how to register.
-AST reserves the right to remove any external event posting deemed inappropriate.

Posts made by a user are not endorsed and may not reflect the views of the AST.
